Who are the top 5 roofers in Nashville?  Answering that questions and finding the best roofing contractor depends on your specific roofing needs.  Asking the right questions is the key to choosing the right roofing contractor.  Let’s go over the questions you should ask in order to find the best roofing contractor for you!

1  What License Do You Hold With the State?

The State of Tennessee requires anyone who conducts contracting business for jobs valued at $25,000 or more to have a General Contractor License.   Commercial Roofing Projects should be completed by a licensed General Contractor.   Be wary of hiring a Home Improvement Contractor for a residential roof replacement as well!  This license does not require a written examination and is obtained by filing an application with the State.  In contrast, in order to be licensed as a General Contractor you must:

  • Pass a Written Examination
  • Submit Application – Provide list of owners, officers, and qualifying agent (QA) information; experience, history and disclosures (prior licenses; convictions; judgments; law violations; disciplinary actions; complaints, including ones closed, etc.,).  Those with a complaint history, such as complaints on file (open or closed); judgments; revocations; or felony convictions; or discrepancy such as lack of experience, the contractor applicant must interview with a Board member at a regularly scheduled 
  • Monetary Limit – all General Contractor Licenses are given a monetary limit which is the amount approved for contracting and biding and is based on proven financial stability. 
  • Provide Financial Statements – Reviewed or Audited depending on the monetary limit which have been prepared by a CPA
  • Provide Proof of Insurance – General Liability and Workers Compensation
  • Secretary of State – Provide active registration with the TN Secretary of State

As you can see, working with a Licensed General Contractor ensure your roofing company has demonstrated much more experience and stability than a home improvement contractor of even worse – an unlicensed contractor!  You can verify your contractor license and monetary limit by going to Verify.TN.gov and searching for them by name. 

FYI – Your contractor MUST be licensed under the name in which he is soliciting your business!

2.  What is your Certification Level with the Roofing Manufacturer?

What Does Master Elite Roofering Contractor Mean

Did you know that only 2% of all roofing contractors nationwide achieve the certified Master Elite roofing contractor status with GAF?  This percentage is so low because GAF’s demands stringent standards!  To become a certified Master Elite Roofing Contractor you must:

  • Be In business for at least (5) five years
  • Meet all required state and local license and registration requirements
  • Demonstrate financial stability
  • Verify you have had no bankruptcies in the past seven years
  • Submit proof of General Liability and Workers Comp insurance and maintain that insurance without interruption
  • Demonstrate a clear credit with no past due accounts of 90 days or more
  • Demonstrate no liens, judgements or legal actions in the last five years.

3.  Do You Have General Liability and Work Comp Insurance?

NEVER work with any company that does not have adequate insurance!  This is required by the State in order to receive a General Contractors license.  You should verify this information or request a copy of their COI.  Don’t be victim to hiring a roofer who does not hold proper or adequate insurance! 4.  What Type of Roofing Do You Specialize In?

This is probably one of the best questions you can ask.  While some roofers have a large portfolio which demonstrates experience in all types of roofing services, others do not.  Many roofing contractors specialize residential roofing and others specialize in Commercial roofing.  Are they experienced in flat roofing, TPO roofing, EPDM roofing, shingles, slate, tile, metal, green roofing?  It is easy to find a roofer to install a shingle roof.  But much harder to find a roofing contractor with a portfolio with experience in slate, faux slate, tile, metal, and flat roofing!  Don’t just assume that a roofing contractor has experience in YOUR specific type of roofing!
